Repiping Old Pipes in Hendra
Repiping Hendra's older homes means replacing aged water supply pipework with new lines, across the whole house or in stages. Every job is done by a licensed plumber. Galvanised steel behind the walls of the prewar and postwar blocks around Hendra is often what brings the job up, and we quote it flat-rate, same-day where we can.

Old Steel on the Racing-Era Blocks
The suburb's early stock went in during one long wave of building, and galvanised pipe carried the water through much of it. Weatherboard and brick houses along Zillman Road and Derby Street date from the pre-1940 era, and many still hold their original steel. That pipe rusts through at joints and fittings as it ages, and the tap furthest from the meter is usually the first to lose flow.
A patch holds one joint; it does nothing for the run behind it. Our water pipe repairs page covers the single-fault end of the problem, and burst pipe repairs covers the sudden failures.

When Patching Stops Making Sense
Repair wins while the pipe wall is sound and the leak traces to one bad joint. Replacement earns its keep once leaks return along the run, the water runs rust-coloured, or the flow falls off at tap after tap.
Two old pipe types sit behind those signs. Galvanised steel corrodes from within and narrows as it rusts, and older copper went together with solder carrying lead, the kind used across Australia before 1989.
Each sign points at wear rather than a single fault:
- leaks that come back on the same stretch, one repair after another;
- brown or rust-coloured water, which points to corrosion inside the pipe;
- weak flow spread across the house rather than at one tap, which can mean scale or rust narrowing the bore.
Age and condition decide it, not the calendar alone. A hidden leak traced to one joint is a repair; the same leak third time round is a pipe wearing out.

Pipe Materials a Repipe Can Use
Copper and cross-linked polyethylene, or PEX, are the two standard options, and where the pipe runs decides between them. Everything fitted has to be a product the Act approves for installation.
What each one brings:
Copper
a rigid metal line, suited to runs where the pipe is clipped in place and straight.
PEX
a flexible plastic line, suited to twisting routes and tight spots where bending beats joining.
Galvanised steel
not an option for new supply lines; it comes out, it does not go back in.
No material on this list comes with a lifespan claim. The choice is about the run, the access and the approved products, and the plumber walks you through it before anything is ordered.
How a Repipe Is Staged
- 1

Inspect the existing lines
The plumber checks what is in the walls, under the floors and in the subfloor, and marks which stretches need replacing and which can stay.
- 2

Plan the scope
Whole house or section by section gets decided here, with the fixtures counted and the route mapped before a quote is set.
- 3

Open the access
Wall cavities, floor framing or the subfloor get opened where the pipes run, so the new line can follow the old one's path.
- 4

Build the new run beside the old
The fresh pipe goes up alongside the steel it is replacing, and the home keeps its water while that happens.
- 5

Connect and test
Water is off while the new line is joined to the meter and the fixtures, then the new line is pressure-tested for leaks.

Form 4, Council Permits and Inspections
Three pieces of paperwork apply, and none of them is a council permit. Swapping the supply piping inside a home that already stands is notifiable work. That means it falls to a licensed plumber, who sends Form 4 to the QBCC within 10 business days of finishing, and you get a copy.
What you can do afterwards:
- the QBCC registers the Form 4, and you can ask them for a copy at any time, including one you believe you should have received;
- the QBCC keeps public registers you can search for a plumber's licence and for Form 4s lodged against an address;
- for twelve months after the QBCC receives that notice, the council can send an inspector around, if you agree, to check the work meets the code;
- if a Form 4 never arrives, or the work looks unlicensed or defective, you can lodge a complaint with the QBCC.
Two edge cases sit outside this. Pipes for a new build fall under permit work instead, a different job entirely. And if your home is a unit, some renovations there can require a permit from the local government, so ask the plumber to check which category applies.
One boundary worth knowing: in the Regulation, a supply pipe serves water inside the premises, and the handover from Urban Utilities' mains happens at the connection point. A repipe works on your side of that line.

Repiping Questions From Hendra
Call (07) 3523 7172What does repiping a house involve in Hendra?
A licensed plumber inspects the existing lines first, then plans either a full-house swap or a staged one. Access is opened wherever the pipes run, through wall cavities, floors or under the house. The new run goes in alongside the old, the water is off only for the join, and the new pipework is tested for leaks.
Does repiping a house need a permit in Queensland?
No, a council permit is not needed for a home that already stands. Swapping the supply piping is notifiable work, so the licensed plumber lodges Form 4 with the QBCC within 10 business days and gives you a copy. If your home is a unit, raise the category with the plumber before work begins.
What materials replace old galvanised pipes?
Copper and PEX are the usual choices, and the route each line takes decides between them. Anything installed must be a product the plumbing laws approve. Galvanised steel itself no longer goes back in as supply line.
How long does repiping take in Hendra?
The scope sets the schedule. The size of the home, how many fixtures need reconnecting, the length of pipe to run, access through walls or the subfloor, and whether the job is staged all feed into it. A fixed quote confirms all of that before any work starts.
Will I have water while my house is repiped?
Yes, for most of the job. The new line is laid next to the existing one, so water stays on through the build. It comes off only for the switch-over, while the plumber makes the final joins.
